IMO it's better to put the copied .conf in

    /usr/local/etc/fonts

rather than   /etc/fonts   for reasons of "courtesy"
and also because (with some set-ups where /usr/local has its
own filesystem partition) the OS might be rebuilt
before TeXLive is updated.
