[texhax] spaces missing...

Agreed, and it's also quite old. The earliest dvips distributions (like,
30 years ago) had those tfm files lacking the fontdimens for interword
spacing. But I believe all of the (few) *8a.tfm files in TL now have them.

Of course, pad* being the proprietary Adobe Garamond, it's not
surpribsing that the old tfms are hanging around somewhere and have not
been updated.

    Similar problems can occur if you use font
    names ending in 8r. 

I don't think any 8r.tfm files ever lacked the fontdimens. Certainly not
as a rule, anyway, the way it was the first dvips tfms. --best, karl.
