Howdy,

On the DVD the MacTeX install is done in two stages. The first part is 
to install  standard TeX Live using a configuration file that changes 
TEXMFHOME, etc. The second part is a pkg that installs all the extra 
configuration that allows for easy distribution switching using a 
preference pane plus the latest GhostScript and, finally, a group of GUI 
apps. This is done to save space on the DVD.
