Are you sure? On my systems caption.sty is older:
caption 2013/05/02 v3.3-89, so it looks as if the fix never made its
way to CTAN.

But it wasn't a bug in caption, the problem is in the (outdated)
subfig, the Author of caption only tried to implement a work-around.
