[texhax] whoops

How do I indicate to tex where it should be looking for various
\input  files?    I do have a texmf folder in my home directory but
somehow tex is not looking there?

Of course, I could change each "\input" line to contain the
complete file name such as /Users/walt/texmf/xyz  but I would
to just say   \input xyz
