[texhax] Characters out of margin

I am new to latex. Using lyx to format documents composed in Scrivener and exported to latex. I've encountered difficulties compiling to pdflatex, with which I've gotten help from the lyx listserv.
I have a 35 page document that I've set to use nonlatex fonts in lyx that I compile to pdf with xetex. Initially I had a lot of out-of-margin characters. At the suggestion of putting the following code into my lyx preamble solved most of the problems, though not all:
\tolerance 1414
\hbadness 1414
\emergencystretch 1.5em
\hfuzz 0.3pt
\usepackage{microtype}
\usepackage{url}
However
I have the mactex distribution of tex/latex. I am wondering if there are addition tex fonts that I could install that would [1] allow me to compile to pdf with latex, and [2] make it easier for latex to avoid out-of-margin characters.
Thanks,
