The main problem is the lack of information. The unknown (?)
GUI interface only (?) tells that TeX doesn't finish its
job to generate a .dvi file sucessfully.
  Perhaps the GUI does provide better features to
analyze the problem that the OP isn't aware of.
But why analyzing a complex problem, if it can be
divided in smaller ones? The problem can be located
in the TeX run (TeX isn't found, the TeX file cannot
be processed, ...) or the problem is the GUI interface
(wrong configuration, wrong paths, ...). Thus running
TeX without the GUI helps to locate the problem.
