Sorry to throw cold water on your party, but in some cases, you have to use MORE braces.
For example, if you want to make your document compatible with both LaTeX and TeX4ht,
you cannot use just $A_\mathit{sub}$.
Instead you will have to make sure that you use $A_{\mathit{sub}}$
