Is it possible that instead you got a PDF file ?  If your copy
of LaTeX is configured to generate PDF rather than DVI, this
would be the case.  The following example will generate
PDF or DVI depending on the configuration of LaTeX :

\documentclass{birkmult}
\begin {document}
	Hallo
\end {document}
