[texhax] Ordinals in \section*?

G'day (again) from Downunder!

Have put this line into my preamble:

\renewcommand{\ordscript}[1]{\textsuperscript{#1}}

and my 

\ordinal{1}

command works fine, in any plain text passage, giving 1st with an elevated st, BUT...

it will not work in the \section* command!

I have 

\section*{January 1}

but I want it to say 

January 1st (elevated st), etc. for my calendar/book...

Any suggestions?

It just keeps crashing on every run-through!
