How about this as a better allegory: Suppose you are driving through
a foreign country and you've bothered to learn the basics about the
native language. You have a map of the country, but you get lost in
a mid-sized city. You work up the nerve and politely ask someone
who probably lives there for directions, and she responds "You fool,
you should have bought a map of this city!" and turns she her back
and walks away.
