[texhax] two recipes

admittedly, this is a panic-driven question, but i'm wondering if anyone could
cut and paste a recipe for the following:

(1) make document text 'spill around' a figure environment so there arent any
blank spaces.

(2) making references w/ e.g. jacs.bst not come out with the full author OR all
abbreviated authors.

p.s:

i have all the nih stuff (thank you Prof. Schneider et. al.), but the
bibliography is "FIXME" and i'm not really following why preamble stuff and e.g.
\makeatletter changes things there.  i tried using a pile of .bst's but hopes
were ruined.  i know two-column minipage tricks but not sure how to get (1).
