It's not much less elegant than using macros like \onecolumn and
\twocolumn.  Maybe it's even more elegant because the multicols
environment provides a very clean LaTeX syntax.  It seems that
multicol is what you need.  There might be some restrictions
concerning floating objects, so I recommend to read the documentation
first.  But it's always a good idea to do this.
