[texhax] Typesetting ½

I'd like to typeset the ½ (1/2) character (using latin1 inputencoding), 
but LaTeX does not use font. Instead, it is converted to $\frac12$, 
which places the numbers vertically positioned divided by a horizontal 
line (as i should, of course).

a) Can I tell LaTeX to use the font (T1 encoding) that is available in 
the postscript font file, or

b) is there some kind of math formula that creates a fraction with a 
diagonal line instead of a horizontal?
