Lyx is one attempt to put a wysiwyg front end on TeX.

Another possibility (I haven't tried it personally) is Gnu TeXmacs.

Being a vi user, you may resist:), but it's probably worth a look.

I've heard of commercial add-ons like Scientific Word if you're running
on Windows, accustomed to MS Word and TeX. IIRC, it's a little bit picky
about setting up its own TeX environment in the same way that LyX does:
i.e., arbitrary TeX commands can break when imported if you're not
careful.
