Problem with russian text and opensans

Hi Norbert, and Robin,

Short version: the error is triggered by fontspec's latest update 2.9b, from April 27.

Longer version: I got exactly the same error as Robin with TeX Live 2024, but no error with TeX Live 2023. All this on the Mac.

Looking closer at the log files with TL 2023 and TL 2024, there were variations just before the error, between the scripts selected by the two, latn vs cyrl, and the languages, rus vs dflt. This is turn evoked the way fontspec selects these.

Restoring fontspec 2.9a from the package backup in TL 2024 clarified the matter: doing that, the problem vanishes.
