psviewer.exe shows erroneous error message

Hello,

while preparing a new TeX course I found that the following (Windows)
commands yield an erroneous error message.

latex sample2e
dvips sample2e
psviewer sample2e 

results in in a pop up window with the content: sample2e could not be
converted, is probably not valid PostScript, adding the extension .ps
doesn't remedy the situation at all.

Copying sample2e.ps to Linux and viewing it under Linux shows no
problem. What's wrong?
