Hi Philip,
Have you been looking in my code? I think you should be looking in the
tex-live code.
Also, perhaps you should be looking not for code that places the
characters in a box of equal height, but for code that places the
characters in a box of unequal height? As I pointed out right from the
start, I have quite some experience with .tex files but little
experience with the tex-live code.
