Thanks! I thought I had followed that thread, but obviously I did
not quite get it.

But will XQuartz 2.7.9 be backwards compatible with xdvi binaries 
of bygone years ? 

It is very important to me to be able to switch back to one of the
earlier TeXLive on my computer,
