Do you have the GNU coreutils in your path?*  Seems like the
Apple/BSD tools work fine, but GNU mv gives you the error.

For fun (?), with the Apple/BSD tools, it seems like you can
manipulate a file using any mix of capitals and lowercase you
like, regardless of what the filename appears to be.  So

   % touch yabba
   % mv YABBA yaBBa
   % ls y*
   yaBBa
