[tex-live] preview.sty / tlmgr vs AucTeX

Is it feasible to remove preview.sty from CTAN, put it somewhere under
site-lisp/auctex and set TEXINPUTS in Emacs accordingly?  If only
Emacs needs preview.sty, this is certainly the best solution.
