No, please! As a matter of fact, I started using preview.sty before using more seriously Emacs-AucTeX ---on a Mac, with TeXShop, and beamer.cls, I've done standalone TikZ graphics for later inclusion on a book:

> \usepackage[active,pdftex,floats,tightpage]{preview}

So, preview.sty is *really* useful independently of Emacs-AucTeX.

On the other hand, Seiji Zenitani manages to make a self-contained Emacs-AucTeX-preview package:

But it's way out of my knowledge to replicate his procedure.
