Yes, it might help - my hope was that they might have seen a similar
problem before.

As for the libtool/autoconf being old, as mentioned in this reply:

- the current version uses the same libtool setup as the rest of
TeXLive, changing it would be quite hard, but of course it could
be related to this problem.

Not linking it in shouldn't be a problem, it's only neede by Motif 2.2,
hence the configure check.
