    does your example file explicitly ask for cm-super?  This is a huge
    package and only few people need it.  

On the contrary, the cm-super fonts are used by default for any document
using the EC encoding (among others) and when the map files enable use
of Type 1's for them (as they do by default).  
    
    I can't imagine that beamer depends on it.
