[tex-live] omega changes from roozbeh

Roozbeh has checked in a number of fixes to Omega and Aleph (to TL).  He
suggests it would be great to do some build checks sooner rather than
later, especially on non-GNU platforms.  If anyone has the time and
will, please go for it ...

(Master tree not updated yet, so I'm not sure if the resulting binaries
would be usable/installable -- just building is the focus at the moment.)
