Matlab is quite old too. It does not make much sense to find out who
the culprit is. And I don't think it matters whether a program is
proprietary or not.

That means that people have to decide whether they prefer TeX or
Matlab.
Actually many Matlab users depend on TeX and vice versa. It is
absolutely necessary that Matlab and TeX are available at the same
time.
