Not exactly, Gerben used altpdflatex which is a shell script that calls

1 latex
2 dvips -R -u +psfonts.map -u +pdftex.map
3 ps2pdf

If you try this, you will probably get a corrupted psfile after step 2...

Btw I don't know exactly what is the -u option (not referenced in man
dvips).
