If you change one without the other, you should end up with two
different ones.

The same symbol can be used for different things with the same
name, one example is

  |g|

which stands for the "order of g", in a group, in a ring, in a field....
Most of the time, you want to be short and say just that and let
the context define everything else. So you want something like

|g| order of the element g, pages 212, 267 and 315

and the context of each one will help define the term.

Maybe you need another interface where you want to (1) define a
