"tie" lacks the ability to suppress informational messages.

This may be useful when one needs to use TIE this way:
tie -m /dev/stdout prog.w prog.ch | less
In such a case using the current method to silence TIE
by redirecting stdout to /dev/null does not work anymore:
tie -m /dev/stdout prog.w prog.ch >/dev/null
I prepared the corresponding patch.
