On line 2825 of mfbook.tex there is a typo:
l.15 ... ..z3e{up}..z4e{left}..cycle;
should be
l.15 .....z3e{up}..z4e{left}..cycle;
(to check this, do the example exactly as said in MFbook,
first setting `error_line = 60' and `half_error_line = 36' in
texmf.cnf to match line breaks with MFbook)
