yes please!!! I have long wanted this since I did the original nasty 
hack about 6 years ago which is what we have today.

one small problem it would solve is putting TeX Live into CVS, which 
does not like symbolic links (as are used in odvips today).

so we can drop oxdvik too? excellent.
