Hmmm..... on looking at the e-TeX code, I suspect \savinghyphcodes is  
*not* currently safe in xetex. (I guess no-one has been using it.)

I think there's a trivial patch to make it work correctly for chars  
0..255, as I previously thought it would. I will look into this and  
do some testing....
