I tried my old ascii.ist file but it didn't work.

I tried the plaintex.ist file but it yielded
strange results e.g.:
----------------------------------------

--------------------------------------
I tried latex.ist but it yielded even weirder
results.
I just want a conventional layout like the above
but without the extra space and with character
heads like:
            --A--

Is there an existing *.ist file that comes closer
to what i want?
