[tex-eplain] using \leftdisplays with AMS' align etc.?

Hello,

Is there an easy way to get \leftdisplays working with AMS' align, gather, 
aligned, etc.?  Now I get the following error:

   $$\gather a \\ bcd \\ e \endgather$$


   ! AmS-TeX error: \gather allowed only in display math mode.
   \err@ #1->\errmessage {AmS-TeX error: #1}

   l.13 $$\gather
                  a \\ bcd \\ e \endgather$$
