if you have OS X, which is based on a unix (BSD), then it should work.
But you might need a web2c build of TeX (eg. tetex), and you might need
some configuration.  I don't know details, I've never used any Mac.

And you have to install texinfo, since texi2dvi is part of it, and it
contains a program called "texindex", which is used for indexing *.texi
manuals.

I'm afraid you still need at least "texindex" to compile the indexes
properly.
