Hello TeX users - first, we regret to report the death of long-time
TeX community member Alan Jeffrey, original author of fontinst, bbold
fonts, and an early core member of the LaTeX team. We've posted a
memorial note from his siblings, and an obituary will appear in TUGboat.

In regular news, the TUG'24 meeting took place last month in Prague,
July 19-21. Thanks to Tom Hejda, Michal Hoftich, and everyone else who
made the conference a success.
The conference web site currently has full videos for each
day, along with start times for each talk (in the comments, thanks much
to volunteer Zartaj Majeed). Individual videos for each talk will be
posted as soon as they're available.

One TUG change at the conference: Klaus H\"oppner stepped down as
secretary due to other pressing projects (but is able to remain on the
TUG board). Jim Hefferon, long-time board member and TeX contributor,
kindly volunteered to take over as secretary, and has been confirmed by
the board. Thank you Klaus and Jim!

- ConTeXt, Lutten/Hardenberg, The Netherlands, August 17--23.

Donald Knuth will be a keynote speaker at this conference. He will
discuss ``The Grapholinguistic Model of TeX'', in an interview by
Yannis Haralambous, and also hold an ``All Questions Answered''

DocEng'24 will take place from August 20--24 in San Jose, California.
There will be several TeX-related talks: Frank Mittelbach was invited to
give a keynote speech on the LaTeX accessibility work, Joseph Wright is
presenting a paper on recent LaTeX work, and Frank, Joseph, and Ulrike
Fischer are holding a tutorial. In addition, Didier Verna is presenting
on extensions to the Knuth-Plass line-breaking algorithm. (I'm advised
that the online schedule of talks is not entirely up to date.)

Chuck Bigelow, co-creator of the Lucida fonts with partner Kris Holmes
(available from TUG via https://tug.org/lucida) and author of many
articles for TUGboat passed along this article about an enjoyable stroll
with a friend through Rochester, New York, and environs, discussing
fonts used on signs as they went.

The article also includes some background on Chuck's work, and several
photos, including one with the mid-1980s VAX hardware on which B&H
created Lucida and many other fonts.

Joe Heafner is presenting a series of online workshops on LaTeX under
the auspices of OPTYCs. The next one is on August 30, and focuses on
writing solutions to physics problems in LaTeX. Registration is
required but free:

The recording of the first workshop in the series, on using LaTeX in
Overleaf, is available:

OPTYCs is the Organization for Physics in Two-Year Colleges and
is generously funded by NSF DUE 2212-807.

TUGboat 45:1 has been mailed and is available online. The next
issue will be the conference proceedings, and we always appreciate
receiving articles early for the next regular issue (deadline October 4).
