On the PStricks and pdf issue, I would like to mention VTEX.
VTEX goes directly from tex or latex to pdf (or postscript, or dvi, or svg, 
or html).
VTEX for windows with an IDE is commercial product and costs money.
They do a free command line version for Linux.
The do not have a driver ConTeXt, which I would like to see.

I am not 100% sure of the accuracy of the above. Check with VTEX.
I have no connection with them other than as a satisfied customer.
