[pdftex] TeX as a composition server?

Now that I've gotten the loop working with plain TeX, can anyone point me to
an example of some lightweight way to use TrueType or Type 1 fonts with
this?  I've looked at plnlss, but it still doesn't seem to give me a way to
use "Times" or "Times New Roman."

I have MikTeX 2.8 on a Windows 7 machine.  I know there are TFMs, etc.,
since I can use Type 1s in LaTeX.  I just can't find a way to get this
working in my simple loop test.
