I cannot confirm this behaviour. On my rather recent hardware
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
there is no noticeable difference in the speed of your non-OCG animation
example between AR-7.0.9 and 8.1.1, while in the case of animate.sty
generated OCG animations the difference is quite marked.

Although very impressing, I wonder whether there is a potential
application for this feature. What did you have in mind that you took
on its formidable implementation?
