Why, it's still possible.  For simple needs (like one file)
there's RCS, and for larger projects there are CVS and
Subversion.  Some text editors (Emacs, for example) support
them and allow checking-in / diffing / reverting from inside
the editor.  And at least rcs is very simple to use, once
you get past a couple screenfuls of the manpage :)  (try
`man rcsintro').

(I must mention that RCS and CVS are only good with text
files, not binaries.  But after all, that's the only true
way to store the documents. :)
