[pdftex] \immediate\pdfximage

Dear TeXperts,

I wonder why the image XObject does not get written to the output file
(in contrast to what purports the pdfTeX manual).

Here is a minimal pdfTeX example:

\immediate\pdfximage {image.jpg}
Object No.: \the\pdflastximage
\end

I don't want the image to be output the usual way. Rather, I want to use
the XObject as a resource for another purpose.

How can I assure that the XObject be written out without being put on
the page?
