I like xpdf, but for the reasons expressed by Reinhard Kotucha yesterday (21 
September 2004 10:27 pm) I don't think you can afford to ignore acroread 
altogether on Linux.

Think the programming/delays would not be worth the hassle, but you could use 
something based on:
	\hpersetup{%
		pdfstartpage={77}
		}
if you are having difficulties with one particular page, and doing lots of 
trial-and-error cycles, it might be worth just hardcoding something like that 
into the file as a temporary measure?

Sorry just another "inferior substitute" ...
