[pdftex] pdftex changebars still not possible?

Hello all,

I'm wondering what is the best way to put changebars into a document.  
I've found some older posts to forums and other places concerning pdflatex
and changebar.sty... namely that there exists a patch:

I'm wondering, does anyone know if a feature request was ever sent to the
pdftex maintainers?  Or is there perhaps a more elegant way around this.  
I'd like to hear if anyone else has any suggestions!
