Do you use acroread to print PDF files?  There is an option
"Fit to Page" or similar which probably fits A4 pages on letter paper.

You could try the program pdftops which is part of the xpdf
distribution.  I always use it and have made very good experience.

If you want/must use acroread, then you can do the conversion on the
command line.  Run acroread -help to get more information.
