[pdftex] formatting problem when coverting into pdf

hi

I'm new with pdftex. I converted a tex file with
proper formatting into pdf and lot of formatting was
lost.

I tried setting some options in pdftex.cfg but
couldn't get thru. This is what happens:

lines from the tex file with proper formatting:
"When contacted, chargen responds with some random
characters (something like all the characters in the
alphabet in a row). When contacted via UDP, it will
respond with a single UDP packet. When contacted via
TCP, it will"

output of pdflatex in pdf:
"When contacted, chargen responds with some 
 random 
characters (something like all the characters
 in the 
alphabet in a row). When contacted via UDP,
 it will
respond with a single UDP packet. When
 contacted via TCP, it will"

how do I solve this?
