[pdftex] font question

I need some conceptual help here...I realize this is not exclusively pdftex, but
it is, at least initially, a yes/no question.

Are the Type1 computer modern fonts scalable in the way adobe helvetica is (ie,
is it possible to scale to any size)?

If yes, why doesn't the following work? (okay, it's not yes/no)

\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\begin{document}
\fontsize{1.0in}{1.2in}\selectfont
There's no place like home.
\end{document}

pdflatex output:

LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `OT1/cmr/m/n' in size <72.26999> not available
(Font) size <24.88> substituted on input line 25.

[1{/usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/pdftex.map}] (./atest3.aux)

LaTeX Font Warning: Size substitutions with differences
(Font) up to 47.38998pt have occurred.

  )</usr/share/texmf/fonts/type1/bluesky/cm/cmr12.pfb></usr/share/texmf/fonts/ty
pe1/bluesky/cm/cmr17.pfb>

+++I believe the above output verifies that I am using the type1 versions of
fonts (and this is consistent with high quality in acroread). Correct?

my pdftex.map fragment

cmr10 CMR10 <cmr10.pfb
cmr12 CMR12 <cmr12.pfb
cmr17 CMR17 <cmr17.pfb
cmr5 CMR5 <cmr5.pfb
cmr6 CMR6 <cmr6.pfb
cmr7 CMR7 <cmr7.pfb
cmr8 CMR8 <cmr8.pfb
cmr9 CMR9 <cmr9.pfb

+++The phv... fonts scale as expected.

Thanks

Jim H.
