I understand the reasons. However Gimp, the most common open source
Photoshop replacement, works in RGB. Most prepress programs expect CMYK.
So the solution has been to save in pnm and use the utility pnmtotiffcmyk.
Perhaps ImageMagick can do something similar, going from pnm (rgb) to
pdf(cmyk); I don't know.
In any case the proper workstream for producing a cmyk pdf file for insertion
in the latest pdftex needs to be addressed.
