You're obviously working on a machine which has a hard drive
of its own ;-)

Especially in the academic field, distributed file systems
are still common (and have some advantages).

Furthermore, for small jobs, file loading takes the vast
majority of total processing time, so (to get back to 
the subject of this list), for server-based applications,
creating pdf on the fly, reducing file accesses can 
considerably reduce server load.
