[pdftex] movies

Apologies if I am missing something obvious in one of the books/manuals, 
but . . . 

I converted all our GIFs to PNGs to use with PDF --- work fine
and all our animated GIFs to MNGs                    --- not recognised

for "short movie" can I read "animated graphic" and if so am I naive, or just 
asking PDF to do something it doesn't want to ?
