[pdftex] psfrag and epstopdf: fonts not showing up

Dear all,

Finally, I switched to pdflatex (and hyperref) instead of using
latex->dvips->distiller to create PDF files of my papers. It looks
great, except for the fonts in the included figures.

My goal is to generate (both a PS and) a PDF document including (EPS)
figures modified with psfrag.

[I use psfrag to modify simple EPS figures, to give these figures the
same fonts etc. as the main text; e.g., \psfrag{KBP1}{$K_{BP_1}$}.
Then I use a dummy LaTeX document including these figures (one figure
per page) to generate a PS file; then extract the improved EPS figures
with (e.g.) dvips -E -i <latex doc name>; then use epstopdf to convert
them to PDF; and then either include the EPS or the PDF versions in a
LaTeX document for generating a PS or PDF file respectively, as
described in the pdfTeX FAQ sections 3.1.6 and 5.1.1. If this is all
too complicated, I would welcome tips about that as well ;-) ]

The improved EPS figures look perfect both on screen and on paper (PS
version). But in the epstopdf-generated PDF versions of these
figures, the modified text in the figures is blurred when viewed on
screen, and does not show up at all when printed.

In Acrobat Reader, Document Info | Fonts shows that only the fonts
from the original EPS files are present in the PDF figure files
(e.g. Helvetica and others).

It seems to me that I should somehow persuade epstopdf to include the
CM or Lucida fonts, but don't know how to do this.

Using dvips with -j0 option to create the improved EPS files does not
make a difference (except for the sizes of the EPS figures).

Could anybody please help me out?

TIA, Sido.

P.S. System info: tetex-*-1.0.7-12 with epstopdf 2.5, 1999/05/06,
and acroread-4.05-6 on RedHat Linux.
